Meet Johnson Mugabo

My name is Johnson, and I am the person behind Makune Journeys. My home is Fort Portal, in the kingdom of Tooro, in Western Uganda.

For around 10 years I have worked in tourism as a driver and guide for other travel agencies. Along the way, many of my travellers have encouraged me to follow my own dream – and now the time has come.

I founded Makune with a deep love for my home country Uganda, and East Africa at large, which I have been so fortunate to visit with travellers over the years.

It is my aim to create a small, local, and personal travel agency that shows Uganda and East Africa through local knowledge and local eyes.

I believe in the kind of travel where you get to experience a sense of feeling at home in the world, a community-feeling and connecting with the places and people you meet along the way. Think of the most memorable travels you've had in your life... For me, happy memories often include connections with people.

I also created this travel agency for the people who dream of travelling to Africa, but may feel that their budget is not enough.

The name ‘Makune’ comes from my local language, Rutooro, and reflects the spirit of African hospitality; welcoming every visitor, whoever you are. It is a value at the heart of everything we do.

I want Makune to be a place where everyone feels welcome – young and old, travellers on a smaller budget or looking for something more luxurious, first-time visitors and experienced adventurers.

That is why I am very open to creating both planned and flexible travels, so that the journey is shaped around you and the way you like to travel.

Maybe one day, your journey will bring you here?

Thank you so much for visiting the site and reading along.

Fun fact #1: I am also a trained nurse and believe deeply in caring for people. It is something I carry with me not only in healthcare, but also in the way I welcome, guide and look after every traveller.

Fun fact #2: I really love ice cream, as you can see in the photos below.

“It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn.”
