Your journey, your pace, rooted in local hospitality

Welcome to Makune
Your home away from home

'Makune' is a local Rutooro word from the kingdom of Tooro in the Western part of Uganda meaning hospitality.

In Uganda, hospitality is about much more than welcoming someone through the door.

It means making guests feel safe and at home, sharing what you have, taking time to care for them and creating new friendships and connections along the way.

Our aim is to make every traveller experience a sense of community that make travelling in Africa so very special.

That spirit is at the heart of Makune.

Our story

Africa through a local's eyes

Makune is small, locally owned, UTB licensed tour company based in Uganda, that specialise in wildlife, adventure, city and cultural travel that is both sustainable and good to Mother Nature and to the people and the communities you meet along the way.

We believe that truly sustainable travel can leave a positive change and inspire new perspectives in the places and among the people you visit. At the same time, it can change something in you; shaping the way you see Africa, the world and yourself.

Makune was created by Johnson after many travellers encouraged him to start his own company. Over the years, he has taken many travellers around Uganda, introduced them to local people and places, and made them feel less like tourists and more like friends.

With a deep love for Africa, we help travellers looking to explore the magical wildlife and nature, and a closer connection to everyday life in Uganda and East Africa.

 Tailor-made travels

We create tailor-made journeys shaped around your preferred travel style. Whether that means a lot of action and adventure or slow-paced exploration, wildlife and nature or culture or a little of everything.

No budget – big or small – should stand in the way of your dream of travelling in Africa.

That is why every journey begins with listening to you.

Good communication is at the heart of the planning process, and there is no commitment or obligations in simply reaching out to us, getting in touch and beginning the conversation.

We take all your ideas, requests and concerns seriously, and we are very understanding in finding you a budget you feel comfortable with and give you all the time you need to consider the different possibilities.

You also decide how much support you want from us. Perhaps you only need a vehicle and a driver, with a flexible route, open days and no fixed return date. Or perhaps you feel more relaxed knowing that most things are included and the itinerary is planned in advance.

We are equally happy to create both kinds of journeys – or something in between – for you.

 What sparks your travel interest?

What kind of journey to Africa do you dream of?

Almost nothing is impossible with us.

You may dream of a long road trip with a tent, slowing down in nature, climbing the highest peak in the Rwenzori Mountains, living alongside local people and learning an African language, standing face-to-face with a silverback gorilla or swimming with dolphins along the African coast.

Whatever you imagine, we are ready to help, and we always enjoy a new challenge.
